CHAPTER 12
Jake and DeeDee walked back toward the Little Dockery Post Office, looking for any signs of cameras.
"Yes, look, right there!" DeeDee said excitedly when they got to the front of the tiny little store. There was a small camera perched underneath the low eave of the cottage-style building that would probably capture a little of the street as well as the front door of the Post Office.
They went inside through a very small glass door, and a little bell rang to announce their entrance.
There was no one in the cramped store, not behind the cash register, and not in the tiny little aisles between shelves. The Post Office, they soon discovered, was a cashier space in a small convenience store, and consisted of a digital scale to weigh parcels. That was all.
"One sec!" a young female voice hollered from somewhere they couldn't see behind the shelves. They heard the thud of someone coming down the stairs, and heard the swing of a door in the far corner, which was well-hidden by numerous shelves.
"Hiya, sorry for the wait," the young woman said as she came into view. She looked to be in her twenties, with a very messy dishwater-blond bun on top of her head, thick rimmed glasses, and a baby on her hip who was in a white onesie. She looked exhausted.
"Hello," DeeDee said with a warm smile.
"Who's this little one?" Jake asked.
The young woman smiled at them, then down at the little baby. "This is my little girl, Ruby." She switched to a baby voice. "Can you say hello, Ruby?"
Ruby watched DeeDee and Jake warily, then pushed her face into her mother's neck to hide from them. Her little frown was adorable. "Oh, she's precious!" DeeDee said. "My kids are all grown up now, and I miss those times."
The young woman grinned. "Bet you don't miss the sleepless nights, though, do you?"
"Ah, I'll give you that!"
"Nah, she's gorgeous," the young woman said, clearly feeling guilty. "Even if you do keep me up half the night, you little monster." She tickled Ruby, who collapsed into peals of cute baby giggles. "I'm afraid I'm going to freak you out now by knowing your names, since Ken came in and told me about you. DeeDee and Jake. I'm Anna."
"Hi, Anna," DeeDee said with a laugh. "We've kind of gotten used to people being ready for us before we arrive. It's such a close-knit community."
"I know!" Anna said. "I do love it here, but when I went away to uni it was such a culture shock. Nobody said hello, nobody knew me. Here, if you so much as brush your teeth, the whole neighborhood knows about it in five seconds flat."
DeeDee laughed. "That's quite something."
"So, were you looking for something in particular?"
"Well, we didn't come in for these, but they look like the perfect post-Toad-in-the-whole palate cleansers," Jake said, taking some chocolate and putting it on the counter. He looked to DeeDee for approval on his choice, and she nodded. "We noticed you had a surveillance camera outside.
